Don't Let It Go To Your Head

This piece was 100% imaginative when created on a plane back to NYC. I individually drew each strand of her hair. “In Pre-colonial Africa, beads were emblems of regalia, wealth, spiritual rituals, and even fertility.” I wanted her head to be adorned with beads that shine from the sun high in the sky. I also wanted to highlight robust features in the woman’s face and body, as being too ‘masculine’ is attributed to more coiled hair, broad shoulders, and defined facial features. As a Black woman myself, I wanted to highlight the beauty in our features despite Eurocentric ideologies.
